St. Paul Spirit House

On Sunday, 5-26-19, I spoke at Spirit House. The gentlemen in the Sober House were attentive and respectful. Here’s the background on Spirit House:

Pat and Barb Madigan have been actively involved in the recovery community since 1988. They began to recognize the need for quality sober living homes in Saint Paul, so in 2003, the Madigan’s transformed their family dwelling into the original Saint Paul Spirit House. The vision of Saint Paul Spirit House is to provide a safe and sober environment where men are encouraged to grow spiritually.

In 2007, the Minnesota Association of Sober Homes (MASH) was created to establish regulatory standards in which and Barb and Pat participate through various leadership roles. Their involvement has helped bring higher accountability, quality and sustainability into the sober living community in the St Paul area. In 2012, due to the continued and growing opioid epidemic, the Madigan’s found there was a major increase in the need for additional sober living housing, so they opened their second home.

Since that time, as a result of the phenomenal growth in the recovery community in the Saint Paul area, they have since opened two more homes and are continuing to grow.

Saint Paul Spirit House provides a high level of accountability which includes one administrator who over-sees all the homes and provides support, guidance and unity to the homes, as well as one on-site manager per house, who is responsible for all daily functions and needs of the home and the people who reside there.

All residents are involved in the recovery community through meetings, church, service work, various events and organized sober recreational activities such as Softball, Kickball, Hockey and Volleyball with more to come.
